WTF

RACE DAY 1 - Thierry and Eric finished 8th overall and 5th in the Pan Am Class (all vintage cars) in the Bag O'Nails on Day 1. Up early, Todd and the team made final tweaks to the cars and got the guys ready to go. Dave and Brian got on the road with truck and trailer very early to get a jump start on the racers and get out to the noon service stop before everyone else. The Bag O'Nails was off with waves and smiles to the formal start in downtown Chihuahua and we thought Team Danger was not too far behind but they had a small overheating problem of the electrical type. Some wires got hot under the hood and luckily they quickly shut the engine off before more damage was done. Todd, Dave and Brian made some quick repairs, and decided it was okay to go. It feels less than positive to post stories and photos of the race - events that happened and people we met before, during and after racers were involved in 2 separate fatal crashes. My intent is to tell our story, but certainly not to disrespect the 3 racers we lost, the 3 injured racers or their friends and family. MINNESOTA to TEXAS to CHIHUAHUA CITY The journey to the start is always an adventure in itself. I landed in Midland, TX late Tuesday night and joined the Mustangs To Go crew of Todd, Dave and Brian and we rolled 2 trucks, 2 trailers and 2 race cars into Pecos, TX to spend the night. The next day's road trip from Pecos to Chihuahua carried us through the stark, beautiful and rugged mountains and deserts of southern Texas and northern Mexico. We had a quick stop in the quaint town of Marfa, TX to get car and truck titles notarized, and we headed for the border at Presidio, TX/Onijaga. Gary is reporting on his blog that the pilot of the yellow Porsche has been released from the hospital (I believe this is Luis Angel de la Brena, the LCP inspector, as they had listed him as being the pilot) and the copilot is in a drug-induced coma. The pilot of the Day 1 crash of the Renault Clio, Philip Macías, is also reportedly out of the hospital. I believe this is Luis Angel de la Brena, the LCP inspector, chatting with Dyana Marlett in Hualtuco at the 2009 LCP. Someone please correct or confirm this.

Yesterday, Day 2 of the 2010 Chihuahua Express , there were 2 more fatalities. At the end of the day in the last transit section (not a speed stage) back to Chihuahua, 2 cars in the Touring Class were involved in a very high speed crash on a divided highway. Hernando "Nanan" Solana (pilot) and Heberto Garcia (copiloto) were in the gray 1997 Corvette and are confirmed dead by Chihuahua Express officials. Luis Angel de la Brena (pilot) and Gerardo Arevalo (copilot) were in the late model yellow Porsche GT2 and their condition is unknown. We came upon the site 30 minutes after the crash and also heard a firsthand account from our guys in the Mustang convertible who were there a minute after the crash. The Corvette did not have safety equipment or a roll bar. Cars in the Touring Class are not required to have this equipment.
